Strawberry mojito

Strawberry mojito is classic refreshing drink, perfect for summers and just in time for National Mojito day. It comes together in just a few minutes and I’ve included both the alcoholic and non alcoholic versions in this recipe. Although a classic mojito is made with white rum, sugar, lime juice and lots of mint and club soda this recipe diverges a bit by using strawberries. I’ve found using sprite instead of club soda makes it even better but if you want to stick to a lower calorie version, stick to the club soda and cut the sugar. The strawberries with bring a nice natural fruity taste to the drink anyway.

Is a mojito shaken or stirred?

You must’ve heard some drinks need to be shaken while some have to be stirred. What’s the deal with that? Well I’m no mixologist but is does pique my curiosity so what I’ve learnt is the way you mix your drink is very important indeed. While stirring dilutes the alcohol and chills your drink, cutting the sharp taste of the spirit, shaking aerates the drink and can change its texture (usually drinks with egg, dairy or lime in there). Being a scientist, I only believe something when I see the data so I absolutely had to test that out in my own kitchen. And surely, the mojito did taste better when stirred. Obviously, I created a mess while trying to shake it because of all the club soda, closing the lid and shaking caused a lot of pressure to build up and explode so that’s not the way to do it folks! So a mojito definitely has to be stirred. Usually cocktails which are mostly spirits are.

Directions to prepare the drink

Crush the strawberries and mint together with a muddler or in your pestle and mortar. You can simple use a wooden spoon too.

Add ice cubes to a glass of choice and add the crush berries.

Pour in the soda and white rum (if making the alcoholic version) and lime juice.

I haven’t added any extra sugar in this recipe but if needed, you can add honey or sugar as per your taste.

Stir all the ingredients together.

Enjoy!

And it’s literally as simple as that!
