New Haven, a city on the Connecticut shoreline and home to Yale University is a hub for many restaurants and cafes that I’ve had a chance to explore the last 3 years that I’ve lived here. The ‘haven’ in New haven actually means harbor or port. The city is also known as ‘Elm City’ because of a tree planting program which resulted in a canopy of large trees (mostly elms). In this blog post, I list five of my top breakfast spots and the brunch and dinner spots are to follow. Although New Haven is most known for their wood oven pizzas, it does have a decent multicultural food scene. Whether you live here or are just passing by on your way to your New England escapades, some of these places are worth a stop to grab a bite.
5. Cedarhurst cafe
📍 44 Crown St, New Haven
🤑 $8-$12 per person
A nice spot with all day breakfast and lunch options. I’ve tried their avocado toast, Belgian waffles and egg sandwiches. They also have a bunch of options for cereal bowls and some baked goods like muffins, biscottis, croissants and a standard selection of coffee and breakfast drinks.
4. Maison Mathis
📍304 Elm St, New Haven
🤑 🤑$10-$15 per person
This Belgian/ French cafe is a must try for some croquettes monsieur/madame and delicious Belgian waffles. I love their floors. Yes, I have a thing for cafe floor tiles! They have both outdoor and indoor seating and it’s located in the picturesque Broadway area oh New Haven, perfect for an after meal stroll.
3. Olmo Bagelry
📍93 Whitney Ave, New Haven
🤑 🤑$10-$15 per person
I was never a fan of bagels until I tried them here and absolutely loved it! They have some classic combinations like BLT bagel, lox with love (must try if you like Salmon), breakfast sandwich bagels, etc. Sometimes, if you’re passing by in the evening around closing time and are lucky, they give out free bagels that didn’t get sold. They just take orders inside and have outdoor seating on. Olmo also has charcuterie boxes that you can order and pick up which I plan to try one of these days.
2. G cafe
📍141 Orange St, New Haven
🤑 $5-$10 per person
My partner who’s French says their croissants are the closet to the ones in Paris so they must be pretty good! This is our usual around the block Sunday bakery to grab breakfast and we’ve tried almost everything. Their ham and cheese croissants and quiches are my favorite while he loves their pain au chocolat. They have a neat matcha latte. Their cronuts are absolute love! oh and they have these croissant style flaky pastry cinnamon rolls called ‘mont blanc’ which I love. They also sell a nice variety of German artisan breads and have a sandwich menu too.
1. Crepe Choupette
📍24 Whitney Ave, New Haven
🤑 🤑$15-$20 per person
My top choice for breakfast in town has to be this creperie. They have a nice selection of both sweet and savory crepes. Being a bigger fan of the latter, the ‘Tartiflette’ is my all time favorite. All their crepes are made of buckwheat flour instead of regular flour which gives a lovely taste and texture to their crepes. Brunch boxes can also be ordered.
And that’s all for this post. Ending it with my favorite view of my city, New haven tempting you to come visit if you’re reading this and try one of the places above and also share what your favorite breakfast spots in the city are.
