Who doesn’t like chicken wings! They are such a great appetizer, be it for game days or movie nights. I like my wings with a twist though. This was a recipe I built with my sister over FaceTime incorporating Korean flavors because she loves Korean food and k-dramas and like I always say through food you find home, this was a little bonding activity being thousands of miles away from each other which turned out to be a hit at the potluck party I was preparing the wings for.
The best part about these wings are that they’re baked. First they are marinated with light seasoning and then coated with a lovely, flavor packed sauce mix, baked until crispy and golden. The key ingredient of the wings is gochujang which is a red pepper paste with a nice umami flavor. It also gives a beautiful reddish color to the food. these days gochujang is available in most supermarkets and Asian stores. Otherwise, there’s always Amazon (linked here)
Without further ado, let’s jump to the recipe!

Ingredients
- 1.5 lb chicken wings
Seasoning mix
- Salt to taste
- 2 tsp round white pepper
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 2 tsp paprika
- 4 tbsp olive oil
Sauce mix
- 1 tbsp gochujang
- 2 tbsp hot water
- 1 tsp dark soy sauce
- 2 tsp honey (can be substituted with brown sugar)
- 2 tsp schezwan sauce (linked here)
Garnish
- sesame seeds
- chopped scallions
Directions
Start by marinating the chicken in the seasoning mix for 15-20 mins so that it soaks in all the flavors well.
Preheat the oven at 400F or 205 Deg C.
Make the sauce mix and brush on both sides of the wings. To make the sauce first dissolve the gochujang into the hot water. This will result in a smooth, lump free sauce. Then, add the other ingredients. heat up a pan and reduce the sauce until thick and glossy.
Bake for 30 mins, ideally on a rack but if not, that’s fine too. Turn them around halfway through.
Serve hot and garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds.
These wings can be pre-marinated and stored in the refrigerator ahead of time. If you have cooked leftover wings, they can be reheated in the oven at 350F or 180C for 10 mins and served.
